An investigation into food inspectors in Brazil has had immediate and serious repercussions for the country’s beef industry. Inspectors are accused of taking bribes to let unfit meat make its way into the retail supply chain.

Federal police closed a number of packing plants and made arrests after raids on 21 factories on March 17. On Monday, March 20, China, the European Union and Chile announced restrictions on imports of Brazilian meat and shares in important meat (and leather) companies fell sharply.

The situation remains unclear in Brazil as slaughter may be reduced leading to fewer hides and higher leather prices.
